The James Morrison Teach Cheoil or the Morrison Cottage commemorates local fiddler player James Morrison, his contemporaries and the musicians of the Riverstown area. The building is located off the entrance road to Riverstown Community Park. The sod turning was performed by Senator Labhrás O Murchu, Ard Stiúrthóir Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann in 2006 after Sligo County Council generously donated a site in Riverstown to the branch. The Morrison Teach Ceoil is now built on this site with funding coming from the Comhaltas development fund, from the Cross Border Peace 2 initiative, from Sligo County Council and from Sligo Leader Partnership.
Archive material relating to James Morrison’s legacy of traditional music is housed at the Teach Cheoil. The Riverstown Branch also possesses a photographic record relating to all of the Morrison Festivals since its inception in 1993. As the archive is always expanding, anybody wishing to contribute material for exhibition or items which could be copied for the archive may contact: Secretary Louise King (086) 391 6761 and Chairperson Pádraig Kerins (087) 670 7329.
In May 2018, the Riverstown CCÉ committee began an extension and renovation to the Morrison cottage by adding on another room. The extension has a huge significance for the community and we now have space to host multiple classes and events.
The Teach Ceoil is used six nights in the week and weekly classes include Flute, Fiddle, Banjo, Tin Whistle, Accordion, Sean Nós Dancing as well as Karate, Zumba and Pilates.
